Pietro G. Gambarova è dal 1981 Professore Ordinario (ora Emerito) di Tecnica delle Costruzioni al Politecnico di Milano (Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile ed Ambientale), dove si è laureato in Ingegneria Aeronautica nel 1966, insegna dal 1972 nei corsi di Tecnica delle Costruzioni per Allievi Ingegneri Civili, e ha tenuto dal 2004 al 2001 il corso di Sicurezza all’Incendio di Materiali e Strutture. Gli interessi di ricerca, che si sono concretizzati in oltre 180 fra pubblicazioni, rapporti e libri, riguardano la meccanica sperimentale, le piastre ed i gusci, il taglio ed il punzonamento nel c.a., l’aderenza armatura-calcestruzzo, i calcestruzzi ad alte ed altissime prestazioni, ed il comportamento ad alta temperatura dei materiali cementizi e delle relative strutture. Oltre ad essere attivo nei gruppi di Lavoro 4.5 “Aderenza Armatura-Calcestruzzo” e 4.3 “Progettazione all’Incendio delle Strutture in C.A.” della Federazione Internazionale del Calcestruzzo – fib, e nel Comitato ACI 237 “Calcestruzzo Autocompattante”, Pietro Gambarova è stato coordinatore nazionale o locale in vari progetti nazionali sul comportamento meccanico dei calcestruzzi ad alte prestazioni e sulla loro durabilità, e sui problemi dei rivestimenti in calcestruzzo delle gallerie. Ha partecipato inoltre a vari progetti comunitari (tra cui HITECO, CONT e UPTUN, rispettivamente sui calcestruzzi ad altissime prestazioni, sulle strutture di contenimento in c.a. per i reattori nucleari e sulla riabilitazione dei rivestimenti dei tunnel in caso di incendio), oltre ad aver svolto attività di studio per il CNR ed il Ministero delle Infrastrutture.
Pietro Gambarova è stato professore in visita presso la Northwestern University di Evanston (Chicago) e presso il Politecnico di Losanna – EPFL, ove ha approfondito i problemi della modellazione del comportamento meccanico del calcestruzzo e dell’aderenza armatura-calcestruzzo.
