Influence of Hydrophobic Resin and/or Nanoclay on the Water and Oxygen Transport Properties of a Concrete

The New Boundaries of Structural Concrete Session C – New Scenarios for Concrete

Memoria tratta da "The New Boundaries of Structural Concrete: Session C – New Scenarios for Concrete", ACI IC - Bergamo 2013

The aim of the work was to investigate the possibility to improve the concrete resistance to water and oxygen transmission modifying its mix design by using a hydrophobic resin and/or a nanosized clay as co-formulating agents. Therefore, a traditional concrete was prepared adding 1% by cement mass of a silanes-siloxanes in water base resin as hydrophobic agent and/or a commercial organomodified montmorillonite (Cloisite 30B) as nanoclay, and its transport properties to water and oxygen were measured and compared with those of the plain concrete. Each co-formulating agent has been demonstrated to be effective in inhibiting the water ingress into the concrete specimens. The effect is particularly marked for samples containing the hydrophobic resin and progressively increases with the nanofiller content in the mix design. Moreover, the hydrophobic nanocomposites concrete specimens are also more effective in limiting the oxygen diffusion rather than the corresponding only hydrophobic ones.
