The Second Penang Bridge connecting mainland Malaysia to the Penang Island is 24 km long. The bridge, estimated 1.5 billion US Dollar, to be inaugurated in September 2013 would be the longest structure in the world mounted on seismic isolators. The paper will address the seismic risk to this major new structure, resulting in the decision to use High Damping Natural Rubber (HDNR) isolators to reduce the seismic loads on the structure due to 2500 year return period seismic event. The paper will discuss the loads and actions the bearings are required to meet. The creep and shrinkage of the 6 span modules of the sea section deck, each 330 meters long, posed a challenge to the design and installation of the isolation bearings. A design evolved to meet this and other challenges will be presented. A total number of 1352 HDNR bearings were required for the sea section. The land expressway section required 882 HDNR bearings. Six different types of bearings were designed for the land expressway and 2 for the sea section. The bearings were manufactured in Malaysia under the supervision and quality control of the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB).
