Environmental Behaviour of Geopolymeric and Conventional Concrete
The New Boundaries of Structural Concrete Session A - Performance and Life-cycle Costs of New Concrete Structures
Memoria tratta da "The New Boundaries of Structural Concrete: Session A – Performance and Life-Cycle Costs of New Concrete Structures", ACI IC - Ancona 2011
In this study the environmental impact of different concrete mixtures based on metakaolin or fly ash geopolymers and blended cement have been evaluated. In concrete industry many environmental benefits are obtained minimizing withdrawal of natural resources, maximizing their replacement by waste and industrial by- roducts and reducing energy consumption and other pollutions. Among the strategies to improve sustainability, alternative concretes are being investigated all over the world. Unfortunately, researches on the environmental impact of these alternative binders are not yet concluded, because of data uncertainty and the influence of several evaluations. Using LCA methodology the main environmental characteristics of geopolymeric concrete mixtures, in comparison with conventional ones, have been estimated. Results show that although some advantages come from the CO2 reduction, other types of impact are still significant.
