Information workflow from existing building to digital model

The Case Study of Ex-Albergo Diurno “Venezia”

Abstract
Advancements in computational technologies during the last decade opened up new possibilities in the interpretation of adaptive reuse, beyond the typical boundary of the discipline of conservation. Inarguably, buildings with historical significance require remarkable attention in the process of adaptation to new uses. Usually, in the attempt to adapt an edifice to established building codes, certain performative aspects are not considered, or considered only in a post-design optimisation phase (Bassuet et al. 2014). Building code compliance often leads to standardised interventions, in spite of the very distinct typologies of historic buildings which would reasonably require highly specific architectural solutions. The work presented here is developed in the direction of introducing performance criteria as guiding principles for the adaptive reuse of existing buildings, and where the correct modelling of these buildings is a fundamental step. The implementation of algorithmic tools combined with the use of open standards ensure the interoperability, streamlines the process of data preservation by reducing arbitrary operations and thus allow the smooth information flow from site to model and back to site.
